Editing, Leadership, and Team Bonding
Editing, Leadership, and Team Bonding are core pieces of journalism, and these are extremely necessary for a successful journalist. Editing, I am improving on leadership, I have found success, and team bonding has always been easy.
Editing
Editing experience
Editing is a vital form of journalism, and I would like to break down further some of my bad examples and some good ones. I also included my notes on conferencing, which is the means an editor would relay the edits to a given staffer.
Leadership
Leadership
I am a great leader, but like any leader, I have room to grow. My improvement is something I am very open to as a leader. A good leader should always be flexible, willing to help, and open to feedback because without self growth how can I inspire staffers to grow themselves.
Team bonding
Team bonding
I am very close with my fellow staff, and I have been able to bond with them socially. But as we grow, we need to hold each other more accountable. As the Managing Editor, I take pride in being the “deadline police,” but I can’t do that right without the bonds I have formed.
Final Thoughts
I was an editor for the ODYSSEY from tenth to twelfth grade. Both years were difficult, but I prided myself on improving. Leadership was very important to me, so when I was allowed to lead, I ran with it and got the most I could out of it every year.
When editing my staffer's stories, I had to learn to look beyond the little stuff and analyze the article as a whole first. Another skill that didn't come easily, but I have edited every single thing I see. Whether that be a teacher's slideshow or a poster on the wall, I edited it. Now with Cabinet-level duties, I have had to ensure not only that my own edits are being fulfilled but also those of other editors as well.
Team bonding always sounds easier than it actually is. I can't just force a staff to bond; it has to develop naturally, and with my staff, that's what I did. I made sure to prioritize a bond before a product, because it was important to me that my staff and I were connected. As the Managing Editor, I also serve as HR for the staff, which means I need to keep morale up and boost energy when needed, something I excel at.
