variety writing

Variety writing is not my specialty, but I have enjoyed writing stories with more pop culture-related topics. I am very interested in pop culture, so getting to write stories like those in Rolling Stone is very fun. Overall, I haven't done much variety writing, but the pieces I have done, I am very happy with and proud of.
Review: "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire"
Left: Here is a link to a review I did in March 2024 for the latest Ghostbusters movie. To write this review, I watched the movie twice, and the second time, I took notes to make sure my story was in-depth. With this story, there was much information to include, so I struggled with the organization, but in the end, I am very proud of it. To write this review, I had to consider the history of the Ghostbusters franchise since this movie brought back several characters from the original. Overall, I am very proud of this review; it was one of my first reviews, and it turned out well.

Classic cuisine: Q&A with The Grill Owner
Left: Here is a link to a Q&A I did with the owner of a local Athens business called The Grill. In this Q&A with Mike Bradshaw, we talked about how The Grill has sustained itself in Athens as an iconic business. Originally, I planned to be a more hard-hitting voice of Athens business owners in this economy. My original draft, while good, lacked relevance to a high school audience. I learned that your story should matter to your audience always, and you can't just write the story you want to. It has to have a purpose.

5 Must Watch Horror Movies
Left: Here is a link to a horror movie review package that was in ODYSSEY's 2024 Halloween package. In my publication, this is not a normal type of story to write, so part of why I was so proud is that I created something new with this. The story itself shows my ability to write and synthesize in a short word count that captivates readers. The horror genre is near and dear to my heart, and I wanted to bring light to five great movies across subgenres of horror. I also wanted to make sure the review package ranged on a scary level, so someone could read it and find a horror movie right for them.

Review: "Pips"
Left: Here is a link to a review I wrote on the new New York Times game called Pips. This was a very spontaneous review; I had no idea it was coming out until a week prior, when I immediately claimed it in the staff chat. In our publictionwe obviously get a lot of music, food, and TV/movie reviews, so a game review like this was interesting and out of the ordinary. During the course of this story, I really did inform my community because several readers told me that after seeing my review played it themselves.

Cultural Buzz review
Above: Here is an image that shows the review I wrote on the horror movie "Insidious" for the magazine's Cultural Buzz section. Even though I am the Managing Editor and not in charge of a review like this, I still offered to help, and being an avid horror movie stan, I enjoyed it. I actually always enjoy writing reviews because anything with opinion always calls my name. I am very passionate about this genre, so shedding light on this horror classic on its anniversary was a great opportunity. The review itself came out very well and effectively conveys the important information while also sharing my own thoughts and feelings on this film.

Getting it done
Left: Here are three images that represent other reviews I have written this year for Cultural Buzz. The reason I wanted to bring this up here is that these reviews highlight my ability to produce quality content quickly. For Issues 1 and 2, there were issues with Cultural Buzz, so additional reviews were needed. I stepped in and executed these three quality reviews. I am a get-it-done kind of worker, something my staff relies on from me. Overall, my dedication and team-player attitude shine through in these reviews.
